I am changing history slightly.  What I already posted was going to the hall and hitting the gong... what you didn't see was ...

ON:

be'thal finds K'Hare roaming the halls around the student area and he speaks first.  "Another gift for me from your brother?"

She chooses not to decide if that was some sort of insult.  "No, I know you would be here to teach and I had a question that I didn't want misconstrued."

He stops short, his interest piqued.  "Your intend to ask me something I will find insulting?"

"Perhaps, so I ask face to face to make sure my meaning is clear.  *pause*  This order about the dropships, I don't understand it."

He was surprised because he thought he had been unambiguous.   "I want you to design and build a version that can be installed in this station.  How is that not clear?"

Perhaps he was missing the obvious.  The order was clear but others would question it.  "The dropship is essentially a Klingon upgrade of a Federation escape pod.  We've added armor and removed the luxury of it, but still, it could function as an escape pod."

K'Hare nodded.  He was starting to see what her problem was.

She continued.  "Our design, however, is planned for installation on large troop ships like the Negh'Var so that weHwI' can quickly drop to a nearby planet during combat or with stealth or in groups that are spread over large areas."

Again the 'ech nodded and indicated that she should continue.

"But the station doesn't go anywhere.  We could only use these 'escape pods' to abandon the station and run to the planet below.  Why would we ever do this?"

K'Hare started walking again and indicated that she should follow.  "For the same reason you would use the dropships from any vessel:  to deploy quickly to the planet below.  Since we are in stationary orbit, we can arrange the launch trajectories of the pods to favor angles for more efficient deployment on varied portions of the planet.  The flight paths of docking ships have to be altered and the protocols changed.  This is something I will assign to Ing.  Once the dropships are installed and working we will be able to deploy a sizeable force of weHwI' to anywhere on the surface faster than that same force could be moved from by shuttle from the various outposts."

be'thal understood now.  It was a interesting plan.  "So you will relocate the raiders to the station and fewer warriors will be needed to secure the planet... barring an all out invasion, of course."  She left unsaid her thoughts about how much more power K'Hare would wield in the system. All the weHwI' would be under his eyes and he could select those he wished to be there. It was a very good plan indeed.

K'Hare nodded agreement.  "I will leave garrisons in the current outposts.  I will start by taking half of each and relocating them up here with a rotation to duty below.  Once we have tested the theory we can streamline it.  This also allows for training in the use of the dropships for the weHwI'.  That means our launchers will get more use than what is planned for the ship-based dropships.  Such issues are easy enough to work out.  We can also test using them for civilians as an alternate way to get to the planet.  If we allow some number to be used to go planet side, we can replace half of the current fleet of 54 shuttles with 6 or so designed to collect the used drop ships.  We could even restrict such travel to land where the cargo runs happen anyway and the used pods could be filled with goods that are scheduled for the station making the process even more efficient.  Of course, that requires extra pods and we will want to build some with a hardcoded flight plan.  The lines for transport are not as long as they were when K'rahl was in command, but the station is beginning to fill up again."

She considered his plan.  It was clear he had put a lot of thought into it.  "A good plan I think.  You seem to have worked out the problems and even added some benefits."

They were at the door of the classroom and he pointed her inside.  "You can stay and observe if you like."  They entered and he walked to the gong.  "As far as I can tell, there is only one flaw in the plan."

She ran the whole thing over in her head.  "What is that?"

"Well, this work on the drop ships, the testing and use of them, it will surely speed up the implementation of them and we will be ready ahead of schedule to start installing them."

She agreed, it was one of the things she liked about the whole thing.  "So why is that a problem?"

He looked at her with as serious a face and he could make.  "It means the meH'Haj will visit that much sooner to get them installed."  He held the serious look for a moment and then turned to strike the gong and inform the students that class was about to begin.

> K'Hare got up and made his way to the lecture hall and punched the gong.
> The deep note rang out letting the students know it was time to assemble.
> He waited for them to arrive.

<Training area>

[roS'neQar Ross McEwan]

*roS heard the gong from the weapons training area and, without hesitation, decided to go as he was.

After quickly cleaning the betleH and hanging it on the wall roS double-timed it to the lecture hall to make sure he could grab a spot toward the back.  From this location he could observe his fellow students while K'Hare lectured.

He was learning as much from their reactions as the class.  Ing's response during the last class and his display of both speaking Bajoran and knowing their culture had been out of character.*

[Sallon s`Twan]

Sallon was dressing in the barracks when he heard the gong.  He had done a personal workout, more stretching and kata then heavy workout, since the students were physically worked pretty hard already, but it had helped wear down some of the stress of his first day working station security.  Things were different here, to say the least.  He quickly finished dressing and headed to the classroom, vowing to speak up less about semantic points; it hadn't worked well for him last time.  In some ways, it was like working with telepaths; they were delivering more information than just their words, and you could be led astray by just listening to what was said.

<Student's quarters>

[Lorta QavIS]

Lorta had been meditating when the harsh gong sounded, much preferable to her were the Bajoran Temple gongs that rang out in the crisp clear mornings.

Blowing out the incense that was burning slowly to the sides of her Prayer mandella, and with her hands outstretched to the side, she said her final meditation chant inside her head, before bringing her wrists to her chest, near to her heart.

"Prophet'a Pagh tokum lasan, Horeth nasat nuzem kalla bushalla."  "Prophets, I walk to my life path as you have laid it out for me, I shall not deviate."

As a child she'd had her Pagh read by a Bajoran Vedek in hiding, The Bajoran had looked at the young half breed girl before him, before informing her that her Pagh was one of the strongest he'd ever seen.  QavIS rose quietly, surrounded by the wisps of smoke from the dying embers of incense, she would smell of the Bajoran lilac and Koshem plant which served as primary relaxants in meditation, and went to the lecture hall.

She took her place amongst the growing gathering and awaited the next lecture to begin

[So`l 'Sparks' Mackenzie]

So'l was fiddling with a flow valve he'd picked up yesterday as part of his duty shift.  Somehow, it had gotten seriously tweaked, and he was trying to figure out how to fix it. Whether he did or not didn't matter in the least, the station spare inventory of this particular part numbered in the high dozens, and more could be fabricated in just minutes. But it was fun to tinker with.

The call for lecture startled him out of the focused state he'd been in. Grumbling at the interruption, So'l filed into the lecture hall with everyone else.

<Lecture Hall>

More than half the students were here and K'Hare had waited long enough.  It didn't bother him that it threw them off when they were late to a lecture.  He had noted who arrived first and that they all still tended to fill the room from the back.  Klingons would boldly walk to the front and demand attention.  These students were still hesitant.   He would have to anger them more.

"Most of you think like humans, or at least with federation values.  It is how you were trained.  Today we will discuss family and honor and what it means to belong to a House.  You may already understand.  We will see.  For Klingons there is a saying, 'The sins of the Father are visited on the son.'  Who knows what this means?   Who understand the why of it?  For those of you raised in the federation, raised to value the individual, how can a society survive when 'innocent' children are punished for actions of an ancestor?"

OFF:

Anyone?  Anyone?   Bueller?

We will have to assume that both Surag and Toran are not around (unless either wants to pipe up now and say they are here).  I guess both have issues with their other heritage that have to be worked out though either might turn up dead soon.  If I kill of Toran though, I wont know which student to suspect.   Ing, Hurgh, Ghoti and chu are on the station, their writers just need some cattle prodding.

Also note that be'thal is sitting in the back of the room.  This hasn't happened before.  QaraH is either here now or will appear at her convenience without warning.

As always, I have taken the end of this message and started a new thread in the student JP area.  Post your follow-ups there so I can organize them into a single cohesive piece (the point of using the forum).  Of course, this thread is owned/edited by me.
