Well, we know the Romulans have shuttles, and there is nowhere else on the design they could really come from.  I like that idea, it seems practical.

I was asked this on the main BF forum.  My answer is included.   Comments?

Quote from "some pointy ear" on Apr 30th, 2006, 3:02pm:
I know that ST: Armada isn't cannon, but what I'm asking about occurs during the opening. Worf flyies a Defiant class warship through the hollow section of a D'deridex warbird, and destroys the ship from the inside.

What I'm wondering is, is it possible to fire between the "wings" and fly through them without destroying the ship. I'm asking because I want to make sure that it is possible to do this without accidentally destroying the warbird.

There are some that argue that the singularity is in the void.  Its a cute idea but not supported (or really countered either) by canon.  I'd say no to that because not all rommie ships have the void.

I do know if I was designing a rommie ship I'd put a gun in the middle because the idea of hiding in there is just too obvious and cliche.  You are asking for it... so put a gun there when some cocky pilot tries it.  But we haven't seen that either.

So, I would say first that if the shields were up you couldn't do it.. the shields would cover the gap.  So if the sheilds are down, why bother.  But technically, there is no reason that you can't sit in the and fire out.

I'd even suggest that the ship have shuttle docking bays on the inside.  Maybe with coordination a cloaked rommie ship could get the shuttle to fly into the void, and then it could see the hull and dock while the big ship stayed docked.  This would be a sneaky romulan kind of design to do.

well with the Klingon Civil War, that's explained by...  cash.  plus, then the focus stays on the ship the episode wants in focus.

Nemesis... same thing, focus.  Also, Shinzon didn't want the fleet involved.  He probably ordered them all to a shipyard or something, or a waiting position.  Then, there is the other side of the planet too.

In one of the core war episodes General (he was still a Sub Commander then I believe) said rather subtly that they weren't willing to devote such great numbers of vessels to the fight just yet. However, I can't remember exactly what episode since it's been months since I've really seen them. Though I do take into account that 90% chance during "The Dogs of War" since it was presumed to be the last strike against the Dominion the Romulans probably sent a whole new wave of ships in to fight. And just because he said they wouldn't devote many forces doesn't mean it still wasn't a lot.

And even out of context, would you really expect the Romulans to have more then 50% of their forces fight in the war? The Romulans are all about secrets... and using that many ships would give all their secrets away to the Federation and Klingons. Wink

Another plot hole I guess... just like the plot hole in Nemesis... the core Romulan system and no warbirds were seen besides the Scimitar? Or during the Klingon Civil War the scenes in orbit of Qo'noS were only that of Gowron's ship.

Where is it cannon that the Romulans didn't dedicate the majority of thier forces to the war?

Please don't quote the BF Database -- it's woefully uncanon. The only thing we know for sure about the Dominion Dreadnaught is... well, what it looks like. That's about it.

Of course, we don't know much about the D'deridex Warbird either. But from what we can gather it's a behemoth of a ship meant mostly for ground troop transport, but it seems to also be able to match a Galaxy Class Starship in firepower and the Romulans seem to have a lot of ships of the class. But what it has in firepower it lacks in subspace maneuverability or so it seems. But with known Romulan decloak-attack-recloak-cause-their-dead tactics the need for excessive maneuverability is also rather silly and un-needed.

Now in BF, yes, it would be an even match. But why is this? Because certain members of the BFA feel that an empire could completely rebuild its military in six years! Actually it's just because their fan boy’s, but we won't get into that argument here. But if we also go by BF standards then right now there's little chance for a Klingon-Romulan War from what me and K'Hare have been "working on". An increased amount of trade -- it's a start. The thing that I admire most about both species is that over the history of Trek the writers have written them to be highly adaptable to what goes on in history. I think both empires have learned their lessons recently with the Borg and Dominion that it's better to work together against these enemies, whether they like it or not, then to both be annihilated.

Canonly the Klingons took the hits in the war, kudos to em' for that too. It's also canon though that the Romulans didn't devote all that much of their overall forces to the effort -- but from what it seemed like it was still a good number of ships. Perhaps the Romulans kept a good amount of their fleet in Romulan space because they were still weary of a Dominion invasion plan? We'll probably never know. Perhaps the number of forces was low because of sheer troop numbers? The Klingons would probably want to be the ones to devote the most ground troops. Again, something we'll probably never know. But none the less canonly the Klingons could put up one hell of a fight but we simply don't know enough to know if the Romulans really do have a overwhelming number of troops left that could take down the Klingon Empire with ease. But if we go by BF's storyline then by now the Klingons should be able to conquer the galaxy by the end of the year.

Yes, but Warbirds are also friggin huge. To compare a Jhem'Hadar attack ship, which are known for thier sublight speed to a Warbird, and on that premise declare that Warbirds suck is just silly.

the warbirds are slow - even the jemhadar ships are quicker then that.

I don't think the Romulans are like the Talaban. The Talaban may be hard, or even impossible, to fully eradicate, but we knocked thier government out and dominated thier country pretty damn quick. In many episodes of TNG, it was implied that one Warbird was easily the equal, or perhaps even a bit supirior to a Galaxy class in a straight up brawl.

That being said, I think it's really a toss up who would win. In BF, it's been several years since the war, and the Klingons probably had a very rapid rebuliding effort, with the vast portion of thier economy dedicated to recouping losses. Not only that, but wars between roughly equal powers are very hard to predict. Even wars between nations that are not equal can be subject to suprise upsets. The outcome would depend on who struck first, did they have the element of suprise, the quality of the senior officers, and simple random chance for things such as lucky shots or uncanny coincidences.

You just can't say one way or the other.
